The Institute of Materials Physics and Technology at Hamburg University of Technology will advertise a PhD position in materials science. The subject is tunable elasticity of nanoporous metals. Based on predictions by the theory of open system elasticity by Francis Larché and John W Cahn, the anticipated experimental research will prepare metallic materials in which Young’s modulus can be tuned, reversibly and on demand, within a large interval. Such entirely novel materials might have applications in human interface devices, sound insulation, or phononics. The research builds on preliminary work published as Shi et al., PNAS 115 (2018) 10914. The PhD position (100% E13) is funded by the German Research Society and the starting date will be no later than December 2019. Applicants are welcome to contact Jörg Weissmüller, <>.
